I'm looking for rock for a 180 reef, mostly soft corals. I'm afraid that if I buy online I'll just get rubble and not nice large pieces. I also live in MN and, in case you didn't know, its freakin cold here right now Any thoughts on these issues?

honestly....i dont think it matters too much as long as you find a good price online.....I have bought live rock online and at a local fish store and there was no big difference...the truth is that all of the corraline algae and organisms will die off thruogh your cycle but will return in a couple of months if you keep the levels right. i prefer to buy at local fish store than online b/c you can see the shapes which is the most important to me,,all the purple will for the most part die off and come back later...some places online will give you 2 or 3 huge pieces in a box with not the greatest shapes

I got a fantastic deal from http://www.liverocknreef.com/ about 5 years ago. I used that rock to seed the 405lbs of base rock for my big tank, 60lbs of hirocks(yuck) and then I had 30lbs of expensive over-priced rock from the LFS...
If I was to do it today, I would probably so the same thing or order 40 or so lbs of premium aquatics rock to seed base rock... I just couldn't afford the $3000-5000 of live rock for the big tank, so went the base rock and seed routine

I agree that the rock from Premium aquatics 'rocks' ( pun intended ).
If I were you, I'd buy just about 10% of my total rock supply as live rock and the other 90% as dead base rock. Like Hop pointed out, it's MUCH cheaper that way.
Marcorocks.com has fantastic-looking base rock.
as a side note, I'd stay away from the ebay sales...they all just seem shady to me.

I did buy 60 lbs of Timora from Premium and 50 lbs of Fiji from Reefer Madness. Rock from both places was very good. Premium got me some awesome large pieces and Reefer Madness got me their package next day when I paid for 2nd day. Great job by both places. Rock curing now.
