Where did my cyano go?

Well my rock had some mega issues from a move from hell, life on a mountain and other factors. I cooked it two months and got the tank going again. There is just a little substrate up front maybe an inch deep max. I use RO and mostly granular every three days for feeding with virtually no bioload from my two fish in a 55g and skimming hard with a maxijet pro w/mag 3.

There was always a little cyano and every week at the water change the substrate was cleaned. Now my substrate in the last two days has become clean. The cyano just vanished.

Did this stuff just burn out finally from lack of food? Do you think there was junk deep down feeding it from the LR and finally it is gone?

Yep mine did the same thing. It was slowly getting better but always there then bam! Gone. Of course with the little ones cleaning help I am getting some back but pickin up on water changes and sure it will be gone soon. One things for sure all the sand he stirred up kicked my skimmer into overdrive! I am dumping the thing every few hours. To think all that nasty stuff was in there.

Cyano is very responsive to light, despite what most critics say. Certain wavelengths will determine the color of the cyano, so by knowing the color you can tell a large portion of what's causing the growth. Have you changed your lights lately?

It's funny you mention that, hypoxia, regarding cyano and light. I just recently changed out my 8-month old actinics and halides, and WHOOSH, most of the ugly cyano is gone from the sand bed! It's almost like magic!
