When????

When is your rock considered "alive".... How long does this take?

Say your have brand new rock, cooked and ready to be put in your tank.

well, the basic live rock would be when it has bacteria that is able to convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. The bacteria levels will vary depending on food levels so adding fish slowly so that the bacteria level has time to grow to catch up to the bioload.

there are different definitions of live rock though... some people associate it with all the various hitchhikers that come on live rock from the ocean, and others interpret it to mean as I described. either way it has to have a good colony of bacteria present to be able to support a bioload (and hence why curing is needed in fresh live rock to offset the die off from shipping)

You mite want to add to the return to the sump pipe so it is quieter and less splash.
