The star has been in my tank for about 2 months now with everyone else. The only thing new i have added to my tank in the past few weeks was 4 large scarlet hermits. Maybe they tore him up is this something i should worry about like will he be toxic to my tank??

I think that if he starts to get really sick looking and crumbling into peices, then you want to fish him out asap, I don't think a missing leg should be a problem, isn't that the way they reproduce? Not an expert, just what I've heard

If any of the body center was attached to the leg it will reproduce this process will take a long time. Also a star fish will loose its legs for a few reasons one poor acclamation or as a defense if he is being picked on he will leave the leg and poor water quality also. I bet he will be fine good luck on the leg that would be cool

My SAlly lightfoot used to take pieces off my brittle star ALL the time!

Marvin the star was always picking fights with the sally, and sadly, just like Marvin the martin always ending up injured

I wouldn't worry

Double check your water temp...but as long as he isn't "coming apart" then your probably fine.

No i dont think that there was any part of the body on the leg that came off. My temp in my tank stays around 78F. I think the leg came off because the Scarlet Hermits pick on him sometimes. ~Tim~

Looks like a mechanical injury. Sand stars regenerate their legs quite readily - I'll bet it's growing back again shortly.

Watch your pH and specific gravity - all echidnoderms are sensitive to fluctuations.

Whens the last time you say the starfish. I had sandsiftters before but got Wasting Disease. But it could be what Jenn said. Just in case I'll pass this on to you. When I had trouble someone in TRT gave this to me, GREAT INFO.

I have had a white sand sifting star in my tank for well over a year. He came (mail order) with four legs. I figured he put a leg where he wasn't suppose to and lost it. The only problem with that idea is that the 4 legs are 90 degrees apart from each other forming a perfect "X". There has been no sign of another leg growing. I can't seem to find any references to 4-legged sand sifting stars.

Maybe I have some kind of mutant.
