What's the best way to do rock lifts?
My tank is on order so while I'm waiting I'm planning. I've been reading for a while and I see some of you use rock lifts instead of letting the rock rest on the bottom or on the sand bed. I want to make it easier for me to keep everything clean. I plan to use a shallow sand bed and would like to use lifts that can be hidden by the sand. Furthermore I see some of you drill and thread rock to make pillars; looks like a neat idea! May I have your recommendations on rock lifts and stacking please? Thanks!

ive come up with a pretty solid way that not only doesnt restrict flow under your reef, it creates the most stable reef you can imagine. You can pretty muc throw your rock down on it and it isnt going anywhere. I cut teeth into the top of acrylci rods to grip your rock like glue, and no amount of sand shifting by any critter will ever compromise your reef.
I also actually make the rods tall in back and the entire reef is hollow. In my 2225 what looks like 150 pounds or more of rock is actually less than 75 lbs. If I cant see the rock it is just in the way of good flow through it.
Here is a picture of the teeth im talking abouot. I posted a DIY walkthrough at the top fo the DIY forum if youy want to check it out
Ill also add that while the way I do it may be better in both form and function than the standard PVC lifts, it also costs about 20-50 times as much depending on how much rod you use and if you do anything like the hollow reef program I state it gets kind of expensive. The important thing is that you DO lift it regardless of how. Your reef and rock will be happier for it.

Last time I changed out my DSB in the 135 gallon reef tank we made PVC stands. It was relatively easy and cheap. I found all the information and instructions here on the reef tank (smile).

Bill, if you need some rock for that 2225G tank, you might look into contacting the local rock quarry LOL

LOL.
hey. ive always said the "1.5-2 lbs" pounds per rock rule was silly and I cant believe people still parrot that crap back out over and over...........
One bacteria colonized frag plug per gallon is PLENTY

Better yet have FlyGuy build one for you. I have had the PVC stands and then Bill built this for me.
Before sand

After sand with only the rods where the rock will be

SHHHHHHHHHH.
I SO burned myself out on making those things. LOL
the last few people who have wanted them I have talked into making them themselves.....I even supplied the 1/2" acrylic needed to them so they wouldnt get raped buying 1/2" from mcmaster carr that was just going to get cut up into pieces and covered with sand andyway.
How is your tank doing Mike??? I havent seen any updated pictures.

Sorry didn't know you were all set with making them. The tank is doing great and settling in. I really have taken many pictures as I can't seem to get any good macros with the tank being 36" front to back. Not as easy as shooting the 125 was.
