whats the best mh wattage for a standard 36" 30 gallon tank

would like 400's (in case of upgrade in future) but I think it would burn stuff.
is there one between 250-400

do you think one 400 in the middle of canopy would do good with pc 's

I also have a place I could pick up a 65 gl. for 70$ and use the 30 for a sump but would like an opinion on this (^^) first.

Thanks
Brad

You can always go with a pendant fixture if you think the 400 is too bright or close to the water. the pc's would be nice with it , so would VHO's
if you are going to upgrade soon go with the 400.

IMO a pair of 250watters before a single 400.

Here is my question: How high do you have to hang a single HID lamp to get a uniform 30" spread, and what type of reflector to get that 30" spread in one dimension along with the aquarium sized matching spread in the other dimension. Then once you have hung your single lamp up high enough, run the "light intensity falls off with the distance squared" formula and realize if you can hang the light half the distance to the tank, it quadruples the light intensity. And 400 watters are not 4X as bright as 250's right at the bulb.

just maybe some things to think about.

I had a 50 gal with a single 400 bulb--I used a Sunburst bulb with no additional attinics.

It looked good. I had lots of SPS. I needed shadow areas for softies. I would just make sure that you can adjust the height of the lighting.

Also, if you can get the 65 gal for $70, I say go for it. Upgrade now instead of 6 months from now. Then you for sure will not have issues with a 400 watt bulb.

IMO two 400 watt MH would be overkill. I think that the 65 gallon is only 36" wide. With two lights you will have heating problems, etc... Use a spider light reflector and one 400 MH and you will be fine.

I have a 90 gallon custom at home that is 36"W x 24"H X 24"front to back. I only have one 400 watt XM bulb running on the tank and it is more than enough. My 50 gallon was only 36"W x 18"H x 18" front to back.

New to it all

Hey there.. have a 40 gallon I am trying to establish and get ready for some of the inexpensive corals... I am struggling to understand everyone's lighting terminology (lol). I have a standard 36" light across the top and the pet store that I bought it all from said I would have to step up a little bit in order to support corals. I am not sure I am looking to spend the 150 to 200 in lighting as we are on a fixed budget. Can anyone suggest something cheap ( even home made) in terms that this military wife might understand so i can have some extra beauty in my tank! Thanks...
