What's a good heater for 150 gal.

What is a good heater for a 150 gallon tank? I want to keep it in my sump. I don't have a great deal of money either. Aint that the way it goes.

Pls describe the room it's in. Is there AC or heat? what is the average temperature? what kind of lighting do you have on it and how long during the day?

go with 2 or 3 300 watt, depending on your lighting.

I have set it up in our front room as the center attraction on it's own wall. There is heat and airconditioning. We keep the house at around 75 to 80 degrees in the summer, and 75 to 68 in the winter. I am a coldy and don't like the cold much. I don't have any lights yet, but plan to put VHOs on. I plan to run tell about 10 hours a day, and have led night lights at night.

General rule is about 5 watts per gallon. I love Pro-Heat as they have an external thermostat and are made of titanium. Check this one out. It is regulated for 100-175 gallon tank and is under $50:

I dont mean to get off track here, but I would seriously consider dumping the Rio pump. It will save you alot of money and headaches in the future. Just a suggestion.....

I have had a lot more success with the new Crystal heaters over the titanium ones. They don't have the dangers of breaking like glass ones and mine has worked very well for some time (Gen-X 300Watt). With the ambient temp in the room you will probably do fine with 2 X 300 watts.

I am setting up a 150 and have two 200watt titaniuum heaters. I am going to run 2 250 watt MH and 440 watt of VHO. My house stays at 70 all year. With my lighting the heaters probably wont see much use. With the pumps I have there probably will be even less need for them. You could run one largfe heater but its nice to have two in case one goes down then you have a back up. You will probably find that cooling will be more of an issue than heating especialy since your house is fairly warm. HTH

I love my titaium non digital Won.My tank temp changes .7 degs. The heater is like a reostat. It will come on low if near temp and go on high if it needs to bring the temp up alot.My old glass heater would have the tank temp var. 5 Deg.

Agreed with Robert.

At that house temp you'll need to heat 10 degrees above ambient; with vho, it will drop to 5 degrees that you need to make up for in the winter. Summer you prolly wont even see the heaters turn on. 2x150 is good.

my preference is for the external controller. much easier to fine tune than sticking your arm in the tank, behind the rocks, and guessing how much you are adjusting. i also prefer the titanium, but have no favorite brand. make sure the model you get is for saltwater, as i got one from Drs. F&S that rusted. nothing mentioned in their catalog, but i did say online "not for saltwater use". i think it was stainless instead of titanium, though.
