What types of tangs can a 75 reef hold?
My 75 gallon will be going up between now and Christmas. I'm starting my list of fish I'll have in it. It will be a reef tank with various coral and eventually clams. Mostly inverts in the tank. Must have fish:
Manderin (I'll have a 30 gallon refuge going to help supply pods, if my pod population ends up handling one easily I may get another to pair them up)
Would be nice fish:
Some kind of Tang (I'd like a Naso, but they just get to big ... right)
Fish I'm going to study up on:
Leopard Wrasse (I don't think I can have a leopard in with a Manderin because they would compete for the same food, but I'm looking into it just to be sure)
Sweetlips Clown (just so cool looking, I've done absolutely zero research on them as of yet though)
So my question, what type of Tang could I possibly go with that will 1) be happy in a 75 and 2) be very colorful/playful? Please list as many as you know .

I think as a Juvenille any small tang would be ok in a 75 by itself for at least 1 to 2 years.
I am really concidering a Acyllies(sp) tang but even as Juvenilles they are way to big for my tank. So I will probably be saving my main fish to be a Blue Tang <-- 50 Gallons by the way, come shame me Tang Police!

Achilles tang are one of the more difficult to keep
MANY (most) tangs are 12"+, up to 24" so i don't think "any" tang will do.. Sailfins will grow to 18" for example. I had my heart set on a sailfin but i have a 120 and i don't want to have to get rid of him if it gets too big (
You might be able to get away with a purple tang ( to 10"), a Yellow or a Kole/yelloweye definitely are the best bet IMO.
There is an easy website to look at to see Species, Size of fish, difficulty, and recommended size of tank.. its a merchant site but its very informative. www.liveaquaria.com Do a search for the fish you are interested in, they have a really big database.

Tangs enjoy lots of swimming room, so I've always read that you should have a 6' tank minimum to keep a tang happy and healthy. Not sure what your dimensions are, but I *think* a 75g is only 4'?
I have a 72g (4' tank), and I will be getting a couple of tangs (definitely a hippo, and either yellow or purple - not sure). However, I plan to get these tangs as babies, and they will be relocated into a larger (265g or 300g) tank as they get bigger.

Naso tangs will be way to big for a 75gal. setup, also the sweetlips clown if it is the fish iam thinking of(Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides) those fish are Monsters!!!! they can get up to almost 30inch. So iam just warning you they may look cute little but they grow rather quickly and might start harming you other fish.
As for tangs I would recommend for your 75gal.
Mimic Tang, Yellow tang, scopes tang, Blue tang which is a very lovely fish out of the Atlantic
well good luck with your tang and finding fish.

I hear the sirens already.....the Tang Police will be here soon so I will post and run.
A 4' tank will provide enough room for you Tang to swim with no problems. Make sure you arrange the rock with enough places for them to swim through easily.
A yellow or a purple would be a great addition. I would only add one, and the addition should happen last in your line-up of fish. They are very possessive of their tank space and should always be the new kid on the block.
As you probably know, they are ich magnets. I use garlic juice to prevent ich in my tanks. I have never had ich in my SW tanks. Had it plenty of times in FW tanks before I found the garlic. I also have a cleaner shrimp in the tank. He has his cleaner station set up at a busy passage through the LR and all the fish stop by to see him. He is the most social individual in the tank.

Ultimately, though, you need to figure out what is causing ich. A tang might suffer from initial stress and have ich, but in an established tank it should not continously be ill. Something must be amiss...or the animal is stressed for some reason.
OK..I'll play tang police. If you can just keep one of the smaller tangs in a 75g it would be ok. The problem arises when people get one tang and then they want more. These are very territorial creatures, and in our small glass boxes they tend to get a little testy if they are housed with conspecifics.
For a 75g, I would stick with maybe a yellow, or maybe a kole, or a hippo. Many of the hippos come over very small and would be fine in a 75g for a few years.
Clown sweetlips juveniles are hard to get eating. These fish can grown to 2 feet! I would pass on this one.

I use pure garlic juice from the grocery store. Used to just add a few drops to the sump during routine maintenance on saturdays. I now make my own fish and coral food using Eric Borneman's recipe with the addition of garlic juice. I feed this everyday. I have had 3 yellow tangs in a 105 gallon with a large tomato clown for 8 months with no ich. I have 4 tanks with no ich outbreaks in any of them for 10 months. BTW garlic is good for you too!
