Ozone is O3, basically oxygen molecule(O+O+O vs O+O std O2 molecule) The 3rd O atom is a free radical and will leave the molecule fairly quickly but causes the Ozone to be a violent oxidizing agent that is useful in removing Dissolved Organic Compounds from water. Because of its rapid oxidising properties it is very irratating to living organisms. This can be used to control some pathogens but its harmful to fishand corals, etc. Therefore it is introduced into the water in a sealed chamber and filtered through carbon before returning the water to the tank. Help Horge, this is too simplistic and its been so long since high school chem.
Anyway this will give you a baasic idea. It isn't nearly as popular as it has been in the past, before the advent of hi capacity skimmers and the rise of DSB and refugiums
