what skimmer to use...
ok, i have to use a 10g tank for a sump on my 55, just can't get anything bigger in there unfortuantely. what good skimmer (price is no object) could i fit in there that would work well? the 55g is an sps tank.
i'd also need to have room for a 2pc baffle and the mag5 return pump...
would love to have room for a cheato-only fuge, but i doubt that'll happen...

You should also look at the Vertex IN80, it might fit in that sump.

yeah i know.. i'd kill for a different stand, but really don't have any desire to build my own. so i'm kinda stuck using a 10g. I'll be upgrading to that octo skimmer then. I've heard they're good and I just really need something that doesn't require the tuning my super skimmer 65 does.

Coralife Super Skimmer 65. Can be run on the outside of the sump. Only the pump and output pipe will need to be inside the 10g tank.

Does the water level vary from evaporation where your skimmer pump is? Without a consistent water level you won't get the most performance from your skimmer.
When it comes to smaller sized skimmers, your options are limited. I don't think you will see much performance increase without getting a bigger sump and moving up in skimmer size. Maybe an MSX160.

nope, the skimmer is on the drain side of the sump and it stays the same level constantly. I'd love to get an MSX, but i guess i'll just stay where I am. I'm not unhappy w/ the coralife, just think there are better option. But the $100 or $150 cost may not be worth it at this point. Oh well, maybe down the road.

You will be very impressed with the DNW-110, I love it. It doesnt need any mods really, but its always nice to have it running as best as it can. The newer models have the nice pinwheel and it helps out a lot from what I hear. If you can get an extreme, I know the extreme is the same footprint, and it pulls a lot more air. Im going to wait for Octo to come out with there new models....maybe next year? Or the year after? I have had four skimmers in two years......and im finally happy.

I look at this a little different:
when I bought my skimmer I thought about what i was going to be doing in the future. therefore i ran a mrc mr2 on my 55 gallon with a gex x 4 running it.

I think you can run too much skimmer too.......there comes a point to where your not pulling what a smaller skimmer would unless you skim wet...then your pulling out more then you want to. Call me crazy...but thats how I feel.

Do an external skimmer. Did I see price is no object? You have lots of options in that case. Don't worry about over skimming. I'm not having a problem with mine I get lots of skimmate out of my 40 gallon with my DIY skimmer.
Get the tallest skimmer that will fit under your stand... Make sure its a recirc. The only thing you'll have to worry about is a small feed pump and the return fron the skimmer. I feed mine with a mag 2.
