What kind of SPS will a Coralife 150watt support

Just starting setting up my first tank dedicated to corals. I have been a saltwater tank hobbiest since I was born. My father has been doing this since the early 60's when he had to pick up fish from the airport in Chicago as there were no stores. I have been doing my own tanks since i was 6 years old. Back in the day I used to catch my own fish. For the past 8 years I have been introduced to the world of live-rock based filatration and have been super hooked since then. My last tank was self sustaining for 6 years, but the nitrates too high for many corals. Nonetheless, I never had to take water out, only in. And rarely did anything die. Unfortunately, I had to take the setup down to make room for some hardwood floors, and I had to keep my fish in quarantine tanks for way too long. The work took longer than expected. Plus I crushed some sea cucumbers somehow and poisoned a whole tank of wild life. I was mortified by this as I am VERY attuned to the ethics of reef fish and the fact that we are taking from the ocean. Well, the new setup is going to be fish-lite as I get accustomed to more species of corals. I set the new tank up in November, and have had amazing success with many corals. I have even done a little bonzai-like coral surgery for propagation and am now even more psyched as to the potential. Anyways, glad to find this site and I hope to share a lot and learn plenty from you guys.

I have a 110 gallon with a "48" Aqualight Pro, 2x 150W HQI + 2x 96W Actinic + 3 Blue Moonlight LEDs" light setup.

I have had much success with star polyp propagation, leathers, mushrooms, clams, and xenia.

I am interested in trying my hand with SPS corals. Can I support them with this system. IF so, which should I try first? Also, what species should I avoid?

All help appreciated.

Thanks

Mitch

I would start with montipora digitata, or montipora capricornas as your first SPS corals, they are fast growing and hardy, as well as one of the lower light SPS corals.

As with all SPS you are way better off to get a frag from a local reefer that is captive growen, these prove to be much better at adapting you your tank. Any SPS you get I would place at the top of your rockwork then I think you will have enough light, save the middle and bottom for Softies, and LPS.

Nice tank, and welcome to TRT!

Cool deal! You'll have to correct my spelling first though I always call it "Monti Digi" and "Monti Cap" just because I can't spell the name properly.

I used to have a line in my Sig that said "I know but Whiskey was already taken"

I took it out to put the macho fish thing in there, but I need to put it back. I got so many PM's about that when I first signed up.
