Over the past few months, my tank has become a green algae factory. I've tried water changes and have been checking my levels, and everything has been ok from that standpoint. I had bought a few new crabs a few months prior. I forget the name, but it's a very quick, very flat crab with striped legs. Anyway, shortly after they arrived, I noticed that much of my cleaning crew was dying off, including all of my snails, many hermits, my starfish, my 2 emeralds, and my sea hares. I had attributed the
algae growth to the lack of an adequate cleaning crew, but I hesitated to spend $ on replacements until I could get the bad guy out of the tank. I finally had enough last week and took the whole tank apart to get the crab out of the tank. Once that was done, I went ahead and bought a new cleaning crew, with snails, hermits, a few emeralds, and 2 sand sifting stars. I just noticed that one of the stars has a big chunk out of an arm already. This leads me to believe that the crab wasn't the only critter causing trouble in my tank. The only creatures big enough to cause such damage, as far as I know, would be the fish.
I've got 2 clowns, a
butterfly fish, a surgeon fish, a yellow tang and a lawnmower blenny in the tank. Are any of them known to be aggressive to starfish? If so, is it worth getting rid of the fish or should I just take the start back to the store?
Thanks.
