WHAT IS THIS...Fungus?

22 gallon tank - power head - quiet one for wave action - Emperor 280 - 96W 50/50 PC.

OK, I've had these little things for a while now but I thought that if I got more crabs they would be eaten. They are not being eaten. So keep to keep this short. They only grow in areas of little light exposure - bottom of rocks. They look like they have some type of filter feeding mechanism on their tips. I thought it might be a sponge but I don't know. Finally, whatever it is, is there something ( or someone haha) that will eat these cause I have plenty. Hope the photos are sufficient.

Thanks in advance!
Jared

I had this all on the underside of my LR. I was told it was sponge and nothing to worry about.

Filter feeding sponges. They are good for your tank. They like to grow in dark areas like under your rocks and sump.

actually those are small tunicates or sea squirts. Good little filter feeder (means your tank is healthy)

I vote for sponges, who knows what type. Sponges often cannot be identified by just a pic, they have to be microscopically dissected.

Tunicates, have an acellular tunic covering them, that is how you tell them from sponges. And they are usually, but not always, colorful. They also have an identifiable intake and output siphons.

ok whatever :shrugs shoulders: they are filter feeders nonetheless and are a good part of your tank and a good indication of tank health.

Touch one on the tip with something to see if the apparant appendages on the ends will retract, if it retracts, this will rule out sponge as all porifera are without specialized tissue therfore, they cannot pro/retract any appendages. Sponges are ciliated with respect to some of their internal apertures and these are the only moving parts on them; catch being that the cilia are not (for the most part) visible without aid.

This is exactly how my little white things started out. I have a thread going now that shows the way the largest one I have looks now. It is about an 1 1/2 to 2 inches long now. My whole tank is dark now so I have them all over on the walls of the tank, and on the ground. I just put my agrocrete rocks in last week. You can see the inside piece surrounded by what looks like see thru cotton or floss.

I'm sure they are tunicates. But jlscrug has a point. Try it I'm curious. If you don't do it before I get home I will post the results.
