For fish the 500+ book is a little paperback available in any LFS for fifteen bucks that is just spot on with recommendations of ease of care, tank size minimums and fish personalities. Even if it is not the best, it is something that everyone in this hobby should have.

Aye, the 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species books are a given. The Marine Fishes (by Shimek) and Marine Invertebrates (by Michael) books are important. They have solid advice and are small enough for you to take to the store when you go. I have well worn mine over the last year and find them great "reading material" for, ehem, well those times you need reading material for 10-15 minutes.
Amazing how much I recall from those books when I look at fish or corals in the stores now. They are not the "end-all" resource for keeping these animals, rather a well-trusted reference to aid when you need to know the essential and vital information for keeping them in captivity. They make good books to use when you are planning your tank and where you would like to grow towards.
Good luck!
-Ken

I have:
The conscientious marine aquarist
The New Marine Aquarium
Natural Reef Aquariums
AND...Salt Water Aquariums for Dummies!
Both 500+ books are in the mail
The thing that stands out is that most of the equipment talked about may not be the latest and greatest. Calcium reactors are mentioned, but are mostly a fantasy. The conscientious marine aquarist is my favorite

Reef Invertibrates by Fenner and Calfo. Good light reading
Giant Clams by Daniel Knopp... this book is "lights out".
