What is a Berlin style sump?

Hello
I was browsing around Marine Depot and saw acrylic Berlin style sumps. Basically and empty box with a sponge in the middle, and usual pump hook ups. Is this meant to be filled with live rock? The link is below:

Usually used to hold a BIG SKIMMER, dates back to before the fascination with refugiums and algae filters came around a few years back

So it basically stays empty?

Thats how they were used mostly then, though you can put in heaters, chem packs/carbon , whatever, did I mention really big skimmers

basically its just a water container with easy plumbing, you can modify or add whatever to suit your needs

Well i had a similar post and now have a better idea as to what this will do for me.

I just want to hide my skimmer and heater and what ever filter media i may need to. This sounds like an expensive option but may work nice.
