Ithink it more depends on what lights you have on your tank and the average lowest ambient temp of the room that the tank is in. On our 135 which is a 200 gallon system we need a 250W, 300W and a 50W to keep the temp up in the winter. HTH
Jon
P.S. many people recomend 2 smaller heaters then 1 larger heater incase 1 sticks on.

I agree with minnreefer, what type of lights do you have and what is average room temp. I went with a 250w on my 90 and the temp stays a consistant 79.1. I did consider the fact that 2 smaller heaters would be better just incase something did happen that my tank wouldn't get cooked, but I didn't want the added plug
HTH,

Im not sure what I have in there now, I have to take it out. I have a 100 gallon with 2 175 watt MH, and 3 110 watt VHO plus 2 4" fans. I live in north california , wer it is stays pretty warm in the summer 70 - 100 summer day, 50 - 70 summer night. the one I have has been good, perhaps I will get the same size.
I was just curious about heater sizes, thatnks for your replays!

On my 415 I have 1 - 300W heater. It came on probably 2 or 3 times last winter. I control my temperature in the tank in the winter by how long the fans stay OFF.
FWIW, Nathan

I had a tramatizing accident with a Heater in my 55 Gallon Freshtank before, and lost many of my fish in a 95 degree (F) tank.
I was MAD about that.
I allmost gave up on doing aquariums after that incident.
only my Bala Sharks and Rainbow Shark survived... :/
Not letting that happen again, I tell you that
