what do you think about the puffer?

He's red?!
any guesses why?
Last time I saw him (he's at my Lfs) he looked less red so I think it might be somewhat bassed on mood but still different then any porc I have ever seen
Anybody know about these guys?

haha
yup I know that!
I'm really curious about the colour though
ever seen a red one?

This guy is only about 3in now
you could add another 9-10'' to that I think.

Do those guys ever puff up in a tank, or only when threatened in the wild?

from what I've read they sometimes do puff in tanks.
usually when threatenned or stressed
but I have seen accounts where sometimes they seem to do it for no apparent reason as well
but you shouldn't try to get one to puff as it can be stressful to them.

these guys shouldn't be taken out of water because if they puff and fill with air they could die.

I don't have one but read everything I find about them... one day...one day

that's argued
D holacanthus is usually the common porc puffer. They grow from 12'' to 18'' depending on who you ask.
So that's big plus they aren't a lean fish so it's quite the bioload.
But they should be okay in something over 100g but probably more comfortable in something 200+
I think they grow fairly quickly. But if you got a small one I think they'd be okay for a few years anyways in a std 125. the only problem with that is when they reach adult size turning will be harder because of the small footprint.

I'm thinking about setting up a FOWLR now intead of upgrading tanks for me reef. (dodging Tims and motorslaves looks of dissapointment)
It'll be a std 125 and in a few years I'll graduate and move him into a bigger home.

Now I am certainly no expert having never had one so all my info is recycled

Oh yeah if you see d. hystrix it groes to 3 feet and would probably need a 1000g to support it.

Is it only box puffer or is it all puffers that when they get sick and die ,they give off a poison that will kill everything in the tank?

it's box/cow fish that do this. But I don't know if all types of cows/boxes do

parts of puffers I poisonous to humans if eaten but not if pricked or bitten
