Question

What do you think?

I just saw that Oceanic has its own salt Natural Sea Salt Mix. www.oceanicsystems.com/seasalt/

Anybody out there using it? Any opinions? Rumors?

FWIW, I've gone thru two 200 gallon buckets of the stuff with no remarkable change noted in the condition of my animals (various LPS & SPS & a few fish) one way or the other.

I am a bit anal about testing anything that goes into the tank, so I can say the following with as much confidence as Salifert test kits can give;

RO/DI water mixed to 35 ppt (1.026 Sp.G.) @ 78 degrees F

420 < Ca++ < 450 (ppm)
7.9 < pH < 8.1 (after 12 hrs of mixing)
7.8 < dKH < 8.3
1300 < Mg++ < 1350 (ppm)

So far, these values have been quite consistent.

I have been using Oceanic and So far I have had no issues with it what so ever... My hair algae is finally gone since the switch and things are growing... My levels are pretty consistent as well.. The only thing I found was Alk was a bit low but Its cheap and easy to raise... Oceanic is now my brand of choice... I have used just about all other salts on the market and this is the only one I was/am truely happy with..

I switched to Oceanic a couple months ago - works fine.

The only consistent complaint I noted when I researched Oceanic was it was a little low on Alk - easily fixed.

Hope this helps.

I've only used IO before now, but switched to Oceanic about
4 months ago and have noticed better coral groth, less algae and more stable levels.
But this could be due to other changes I've made to the tank.

Sea Scope just relased a ne issue and in that issue they talk about salt mixes they also rated them one by one. I use instant ocean but after reading this i am definitly switching when i an out of it. It goes like this from worst to best. They were all based on the amount of trace elements in each one.

10. tropic marin (wow)
9. instant ocean
8. reef crystals (figures it is made by instant ocean
7. oceanic sea salt
6. red sea
5. coralife (surprising)
4. natural seawater
3. crystal seas marine mix bioassay
2. catilina water company

Number 1 salt mix according to sea scope is Bio sea marine mix.

Hope this helps
