What did you have before a Durso?

Just curious what everyone had before a durso standpipe? I'm looking to start doing noise reduction, and figured that was the best place to start. The 90 AGA drilled tank I bought used has a balloon type aparatus in the overflow on a vertical pvc pipe, as water drains with the pump off, the balloon lowers and eventually covers the whole to plug the pvc pipe to stop the water draining. I'm assuming a durso is going to make a drastic difference versus what I have now? Thanks!

I had a similar old-style overflow kit. Float valve on top, nasty sponge covering honeycomb pipe, on PVC that fit into the bulkhead.

The Durso style is MUCH better!

A straight standipipe will sound like a toilet flushing every few minutes.

until durso's I just used bonded pad to take out the noise of the water dropping down the over flow.

Thats pretty much the answer I was anticipating! How difficult is it to put a durso standpipe in a already up and running tank? Just shut the pumps off, let everything drain, then pump out the rest of the water in the overflow with a power head or something? I'm guessing I can leave the bottom portion of the drain connected to the bulkhead while i put the durso in? Is there anything basic I'm missing other than unscrew old replace with new??
