That would be Steve Tyree's Coral tank. He has some of the most rare and popular and spectacular montipora corals in the world. The "Sunset Monti" is one of his most rare and prized corals in the world of captive reefing. From what I understand there were only 3 frags of the original Sunset Monti bought out by 3 individuals, one being Steve Tyree. The true color combinations and extreme rareness is what sets his corals apart from the rest.

I have a mile high monti and a white with pink polyps (turning green with pink polyps) from him and let me say... they are actually quite nice and vibrant. the funny thing is that you can actually get these same corals elsewhere. the difference is that tyree corals are usually tank raised and not constantly harvested from the ocean.

The history is correct, but the "rareness" is mostly advertising and hype to justify the high price at this point. There is really not that short of a supply of these items now. Just think of how often you see "limited edition" corals in the LFS or online. Every one of those frags that are sold get grown out and then sold/traded and so forth. They are definitely pretty and hardy corals though, so if you find one that you like and can afford - buy it and share it with some friends!

the prices are set by supply and demand. The sunset monti is a slower grower than say the superman. It is more unique and there are no copies of it. The demand is so high or supply so low that online @ $120 / .5" I doubt you can find one.
