What are these hairballs I'm finding?

Ok I'm guessing these are sponges of some sort but I'm finding these masses that look like a wet dirty pile of short hair and dust, kinda looks like something you'd wind up with after sweeping the floor =P. I've got 1 big clump on a hunk of LR I just found today and I occasionaly see some of it just laying around on the bottom of the tank, any ideas? Should I be concerned about this?

I'm trying to picture your description in my mind's eye to see if that matches up with anything I've had in my tanks. Not coming up with anything, but I haven't had much caffeine yet!

Could be aliens.

I have some dirty hairballs under the tank, but I think it is where the cat has started shedding the winter coat...

Hair balls? Is there an associated choking sound coming from your cat?

Aliens ... hmmmm perhaps!!! No pix, the only digi cam I have can't take good enough pics. Oh the grey hairball stuff is squishy btw, I think I'm just gonna ignore it for now and write it off as the ugliest sponge I've ever seen =P
