I wanted a saltwater tank forever. I just kept hearing the same thing over and over again. About how hard it is to maintain it and it's so expensive and blah blah blah. I shouldn't have listened to the "nay" sayers.

If I had to do it again . I would have went to a tank and sump instead of my Red Sea Max . Nice little tank but not a tank for the serious hobbyist.
It's ok . I bought a 150 show tank so I feel better now

What I would do (and am doing at the moment), is starting a reef tank with 95% porous base rock (was live 4 months ago) and watch how much it changes over at least a few years. I have the patience and as I see reef keeping as a form of art, I want to start the picture from a blank canvas, not have it half painted before I start.

I'd love to start out with everything, instead of buying it a long the way.
Like, the things needed to mix my own RO/DI, and a refugium. Other than that, I guess I've been very lucky when it came to getting a good deal on everything so far.

If I could doit all again I don't think I would. By doing things the way I have, I think I have learned more than I would if I started with the best. I could have started with a giant tank, the best MH light, and a giant skimmer but I didn't. I started with a free tank I found in a friends basement, and from such a basic beging I feel that What I have learned is better knowledge.
