Question

Weekend devastation follow up and ?

Weekend devastation follow up
http://www.premiumreef.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004339.html

Ok everyone my tank has been back up and running for a week now. All
Fish, shrimp and crabs lost. Half of my corals made it back and actually look better than ever.
Question though I now have a brown dusting of I suppose algae that is covering half
of my sand. What is it and how do I get rid of it? I have never had this problem with
this tank even when I first set it up.
Should I do another water change all my water parameters seem to be in check?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like golden-brown diatoms.

You've apparently gone through a mini-cycle after the crash. Just keep very tight controls on nutrient input.

Sometimes, cyanobacteria or dinoflagellates can follow, piling up a goopy biofilm over the brown dust, hence the caution: if the dust starts to act more like a film, I would recommend teasing it off the sandbed with a probe-stick and very carefully siphoning the gunk out.

It definately seems to be a brown diatom bloom. Had one in my new tank and blew it off my rocks and lightly on the substrate and with snails and crabs added it went away in about a month. Johnny

Thanks everyone that's what I thought it was. Just never had the problem before.
Got home last night and it was not as bad as the day before maybe it's settling in.

Hello my name is toadstool and I am a reefaholic.
