weak xenias

My xenias (zenias?) seem to be quite intolerant of current. I suppose I had too much, but I've reduced it to 1 MJ 1200 plus my Mag 5 return in a 50 gal tank. There is a ton of LR to divert the flow as well. The problem is no matter where I point the power heads/return, they get bent over in the current and they don't seem to like it. Perhaps the "stems" are weak?
Any ideas/opinions?

how long has your tank been running??? A healthy clean system without a bunch of excess nutrients cant support them and they wither and die.

Just under four months. They don't seem unhealthy, after a WC they pump and are growing pretty fast, though not as fast as the guy who fragged them for me. As far as the excess nutrients go, not sure I understand...

Your tank needs to be kinda dirty, compared to a tank with LPS or SPS type of coral thats about it. I had the same problem.
Brent.

Ahh, so I can feed more? I've been mixing it up a bit lately with some mysis and some cyclopeze. Maybe they need some time to acclimate with the new diet.

If the xenia are new to the tank, then I wouldn't worry too much. Mine did the same for the first few weeks after I introduced it to the tank. After a while, it gets used to the flow and expands nicely. Brent's right, xenia tend to do better in tanks that aren't heavily skimmed.

You could try to dose some Iodine but always test first. r you could just dose like 2 drops that wouldnt hurt and may make them pulse for you.

They've been in there for about a month and a half, so I may as well try the iodine. What about some powdered calcium supplement?

Be careful about throwing a bunch of additives into the tank. What are your water parameters? If your calcium level is OK, why add a bunch of powdered calcium stuff? How often do you do a water change? Do you run carbon? How old are your bulbs? I doubt that supplements will help unless your bioload is such that it binds up all the nutrients quickly or your skimmer is removing all the trace elements.

Do you add liquid calcium now? If you do, you shouldn't need to add more.
My xenia let me know when the water quality is bad. They start to droop.

One more thing... my xenia love flow. I don't know, think, if you can overdo the flow on them.

I do two small water changes each week. I run carbon. My bulbs are quite new with another set of NO T-5s on the way. I've added two doses of powdered calcium in the past month. I should test for it. They seem to be doing fine now, pumping in fact. But they just don't seem to be able to withstand ANY current. It's like there is a strong breeze on them where there is almost no flow at all.....
