We all forget, how to hatch brine

Alright, take me back to school. It's been so long since I have had to hatch baby brine shrimp that I want to make sure I am doing it right. So this is what I got. I cut the top off of a plastic gallon milk container, rinsed it, rinsed, and then rinsed again. Poured in the brine shrimp eggs, poured in about 1/4 gallon of tank water, tossed in an airstone, and put a 60 watt light over it. Did I forget anything? Many of the eggs have settled on the bottom, I believe a few years ago when I had to do this I used soda bottles instead and the eggs stayed in suspension. Will the eggs still hatch? Maybe a pic can better tell what I mean. The one the left I started 36 hours ago with pretty old eggs, the one on the right I started 13 hours ago with new eggs. Anything I can do to speed this process along? I could add a heater if I could figure a way to hook it on.

Getting back to the basics here aren't we?

Drew,

Do you have a plastic bag that fish came in? You can rubberband the bottom together in a cone shape and use that too. It will float in the tank and keep the temp up too.

Don't different brands of eggs have different hatch temps and salinities too?

I like the de-capped eggs best too!

You can set up a tank with a heater and put the milk jug in it.

Drew, we used a 1 liter bottle that was filled with soda and we use the San Fran brand brine shrimp eggs, and they were suspended the entire time. HTH

I use the San Francisco shrimp hatchery. It's only about $7 at Petcon (or Pet Warehouse). It works great. They hatch in the salt water in the bottom part and the collection cup on top is filled with freshwater, so they basicaly "wash" themselves.

I put the mix in at night before I go to bed, put in a airstone and let it bubble all night. In the morning take the airstone out and put the collection cup on. When I get home from work the collection cup is loaded. I can milk this mix for two or three more nights. Just keep putting the airstone in at night and the collection cup during the day (they are attracted to the light), after a few days the yield starts getting very thin. Just put in a new mix and start all over again.

I usually feed 1/2 of each collection cup to the reef and put the other 1/2 in a 2 gallon tank where I raise them to adults to feed to the bigger fish.
