Kind of a hard topic to get a good feel for. Different stages of the tank will require different frequencies of testing.
Early on...when cycling, some people test everyday (which is good practice...since there's not much else to do at that point...cept research! )
But my tank's been up over a year...so I basically only test for Ca and Alk (have a pH monitor...so check that several times a day).
after a while, you kind of get an eye for the tank. You can tell, just by looking at your corals and what not...whether something's out of whack.

It also depends on the size of the tank. My current tank is small so I do my test often.

Oh crap, I log all my test results too, I didn't realise I could check more than one. I do the Ca, Alk, Ph, Phospate, Nitrate weekly. Mag I do about every other week.

Alk and specific gravity about twice a week (I rarely make adjustments to my dosing routine, but I want to keep that warm fuzzy feeling that things are still in line).
If I'm doing something like switching from kalk to a calcium reactor, or performing a rapid series of water changes (like I'm doing now in one of my tanks to switch from NSW to ASW) I check alk and specific gravity once a day.
It's pretty rare for me to test anything else, like calcium, pH, strontium or nitrate, unless I'm curious as to what the levels are.

I try and do every thing (pH, CA, salinity, etc.) at least once a week, but when I'm having issues with corals or fish I test many more times than that!
