I really do check the smell of my water,.. I see I am not the only one!

I also check salinity from time to time because I skim wet.

i taste test my water... over years and years and years you develop a keen sense of when SG, nitrates, ph, some times even temp, is out just a hair, i dont buy test kits anymore, just fill a cup and drink it down. (but really i test every couple days, its a new tank and i dont know what im doing. but i do get that nasty water in my mouth all the time.)

I didn't think this through before voting. Once the tank is cycled I rarely test for anything other than ph,alk, and cal(nitrates occasionaly). Light feeding + light bio load + water changes pretty much negate the need for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
