Question

Water Temp ????

I know this will probably vary just looking to see what type of temp you run in your tank. Let me know if it's a reef or FO.

I am running 77* now in a reef. Seems to have worked thus far.

Any opinions on an "ideal" temp or range?

I used to run my temp around 79 and thought I'd try 77 to reduce film and spots on acrylic. I also cut back light about an hour and seemed to help a lot. Never had an algae issue however, just a film and spots on the acrylic that were a pain to scrub off.

I run around 80°-81°.

Ideal depends entirely on what your keeping.

FO tanks should be kept a little lower...as high temps speed up metabolic rates, thus decreasing the lifespan of you fish.

but in reef tanks, a little higher temps are recommended.

all depends.

So is 77* a bit cool. Should I run more like 78* My chiller has a 2* range so if it's set at 77 the water range is 79-77. Or if I set it a 78 the range would be 80-78. Basically kicjs on when the emp rises 2* and pulls it down two then shuts off. It may only run once (fall-spring) or 2-3times a day in the summer.

You should be ok at 77, but I wouldn't let it get any lower, as long as it doesn't fluctuate any lower then you're ok. Personally I like the 78-80 degree range a little better since corals like warmer temps.

And speaking of warmer temps, doesn't this cold weather make you wanna jump in your tank for a swim?? I was thinking that last night when I had my hands in the tank!!

between 76 and 81 depending on the season. i have a seasonal controller on the tank. temp really does not matter to much unless you get above 85 and below 70. in this range you are really just changing the metabolism of the critters. the higher the temp the faster the metabolism. this relates to higher growth rates, but it also means things can go down hill faster.
