Water Change on a 46

Hi All,

As of now I change out 5 gallons every two weeks on my 46 gallon tank. Should I be doing more than that?

Probably yes. All depends on the equipment, livestock and your tank age. I do a 5g water change every 2 weeks on my 42 gal reef(taking the sump/refugium into account) But I think I should do a 4 gal wc every week but Im a student and I can't do that.

I would recommend doing at least 5 to 10 gallons more. Depends on how much live stock you've got.

I would only do that much each month (10%). To each his own i guess. I really depends on the health of the critters inside. and the bioload.

The rule is 20% a month so your ok but if you add alot or feed alot then I would do more, and it doesn't hert to do more!I have a 50 gal and do a 5 gal. a week of NSW and thats all I do,except maybe once a month I add Iodine.

How long have you been doing this? and how long's the tank been up?

if it's been working for you for a long time...stick with it.

If it's a fairly young tank, might wanna just up it to 8 or 9 gallons per change.

Might be getting by now, but bad things could slowly be building up in your tank. Nothing you'd notice right now...but if each time, a little bit more bad stuff stays behind...over time, your rock will slowly absorb things (phosphates/silicates/etc). And one day, WHAM...an irreversible hair algae breakout!

But if you've been doing this for a year or more...I'd stick with it.
