Question

Wanto to start first reef tank

I Have a 60 gallon aquarium witha fluval 404 and thats all. I want to start my first reef tank. I read some books and I have some questions.I need some help with what would be the best lighting for my 60 gallon tank? What other kinds of filtration does everyone suggest. If I get live rock in time will corals grow from it or do I have to buy the corals the books aren't clear on that. Also if anyone has any other suggestions.Thank you.

Hi Fisherman,

The best place to start would be with some up to date books. The Conscientious Marine Aquarist, by Robert Fenner; or Natural Reef Aquariums, by John Tullock, are two of the best. I would recommend getting either or both; each is available online for about $25 apiece.
Corals must be introduced to your aquarium, though occasionally a few polyps show up as hitchikers on live rock. The best source is other reefers for "frags" or buy aquacultured corals from reputable dealers.
What are the dimensions of your 60 gal?
There are many variables in setting up a new tank; size is one factor and what your goals are for corals is another. Some corals require more intense light than others.
As a very basic plan, I would recommend a deep sand bed of 4-6"; Approximately 60-90 lbs. of live rock; a sump of at least 20 gallons and a good protein skimmer. As for lights, you need to decide your goals before choosing.
It is so important at this point to read as much current information as possible and ask questions on the board before making purchases or decisions concerning your setup. There are many ways to set up a nice tank but there are also many conflicting opinions, even among the "experts". The best way to avoid unneccessary expense or potential mistakes is to read, read and read some more!!
Here are some good websites with information about setting up a tank; sandbeds and live rock: http://www.webring.org/cgi-bin/webri...g=reeffaq;list http://www.hobbyschool.com/reef/ http://www.wyx.com/iheo/tank/new.htm http://www.reefkeepers.org/faq/cache/33.html http://www.reefs.org/library/talklog...ek_090698.html
And of course, the archives here on TRT!
Again, welcome to The Reef Tank!

Ok, I am not the one stop shop for answers, but I'll give my recommendations. Please get information from other sources as well.

I use Power Compact lighting and I think that this works well with soft corals. Most people start with soft corals and I am still stuck (and happy) in this stage. I bought mine here AH Supply and have had no problems.

Filtration could become a very touchy subject. I personally believe in the "Live Rock/Live Sand" method with only a small Protein Skimmer. I have found that with an appropriate amount of live sand and live rock, all of your biological filtration will be taken care of. You may want to look into some form of mechanical filtration to remove waste and other particulate build up if you have a problem with it but there are other ways to solve that problem.

Live rock will sometimes come with lots of corals on it, but your talking major high dollar rock. Normally I am happy with just good purple rock. You may be able to find a store in your area to purchase corals, or get them online.

Read some people's web pages about their setups. They usually describe every aspect of the setup (cause we're d*mn Proud) and any pro's and con's about what they have done.

My page is at www.lupton-net.com/reeftank and there are a lot of good pages in the links section at the main page for this discussion board www.thereeftank.com

Have fun

Sounds like my old 55g wide tank, which now resides under the 75g as a sump. With a tank that shallow either the power compact from AHSupply or VHO will work, tho my preference is for VHO, at either rate you want to have at least 4 of the 96w or 110 watt tubes even for the so called low light, beginers corals. I am seriously thinking of adding 2 bulbs to my setup and increasing the light to 600 watts or so.
The other important thing is to start cultivating a decent sand bed, with lots so detrivores and micro fauna. The live rock will get the dentrifying cycle going but over a period of time its well laid out sand bed that provides most of the waste reduction in a reef tank
