Hey all,
My question is Ball's Pickling Lime at Wal-Mart the same as Kalk.Or does the same thing as kalk? I read the active ingredient is Hydrated Lime. Can someone tell me if this is the right stuff and how much to mix per gal or water? ANd there experience using it.
Hey Hung long time dude
y its the same, not quite as fine so it chews up Nilsen reactor pumps but OK as KALK drip 1-2 teaspoons per gallon mix and drip the clear part after it settles, use an IV bag so it dont suck air
Out of stupidity. I need to ask this question. In What department can one find pickeling lime. I doubt that it is used to make pickles as it is a caustic and pickeling is done with vinegar which is acid..Just a question..
Fred Meyers has it out here in the NW. But you will need to call them to see if they have it in stock. You should call them. Here's a place I found on the net where you can order it.
There is also Mrs. Wages pickling lime. Heard that Mrs Wages was a purer lime. You can get that usually at any grocery store in the canning section by spices, etc.
Of course it's used to make pickles! Actually, most modern recipes don't use it, but many older pickle recipes call for pickling lime. One generally soaks the cukes in a lime bath overnight and rinses very well before doing the whole vineage thing. It's supposed to make the pickles crispier.
Just run a web search, and I'm sure you'll find all sorts of pickling lime recipes.
Mixing and dripping kalk is a real pain in the butt. There are many DIY plans for Nilsen Reactors. With the investment of under $100 for a simple one with a used peristalic pump, you can have your kalk automatically dose for weeks at a time without messing with it.
The most expensive part of a Nilsen Reactor is the pump. If you can find a good price on a surplus peristalic pump or even easier, if less precise, a powerhead and float, the reactor itself is easy and cheap.
Check out my reactor, in service now for over 2 years. Ca at 500 and Alk at 12dkh. I used the pump I was already using for auto-topoff so my costs were about $70 if I remember right., Go with plain old PVC and save another $20.
Do a Yahoo for DIY Nilsen reactors and you should find lots of plans
