wal mart 10 gallon. tempered?
does anybody know if the 10 gallon tanks from wal-mart are tempered. It came in a 10 gallon kit. I can't find it on their web site. I need to drill a 5/8" hole for my auto top off system using the kent float valve. I'd rather no drill it, but I want a gravity fed top-off, and there aren't any floats that don't require drilling.

I highly doubt it's tempered, my 29G wasn't. I just picked up a 75G AGA from the LFS and the bottom of it IS tempered.

yeah, my 29 gallon had a sticker on the bottom that said tempered. I don't know if that meant just the bottom or the whole tank. But does anyone know if the Wal-mart 10g is tempered.
If it even was tempered, is a 5/8" hole enough to crack the tank?

Is it an 'aga' brand?
the 75g says 'bottom tempered, do not drill'. Someone here posted that if it is tempered then there will be something stamped on the glass. I really doubt it is.
Only thing I can say is use the right bit & be sure to use duct tape on the opposite side of the hole. some posters recommend a clay dam or having someone spraying a water/soap mix to keep the bit cool. GL.

i really doubt ANY ten gallon is tempered, but if it is, its probably just the bottom, most companies only temper the bottom for weight and such. but not the back and sides.

Ive bought 15+ 10 gallon tanks from Walmart and none of them were tempered. Ive drilled them all. I get the ones that are like 9.95 and are in a plain white box
As a side note i drilled the bottoms and sides

I dont know of any tanks that are tempered on the sides. They only do thatto the bottom to support the weight of rocks and whatever else u place in the tank..... go ahead and drill it, u shouldnt have a problem.

thats enough votes for me. off to home depot tomorrow for a glass bit. I've been losing about 5 gallons per week on my 29 gallon! It's unbelievable, I really need this top off. I'll probably use a 10 gallon container. thanks for the votes.
Did I mention im losing 5 gallons a week in evaporation on a 29 gallon tank?

Do you have a sump set up or is that just loss from the tank itself?

5 gallonsa week sounds reasonable to me. I lose 5-6 a day on my 225. You just recently added MH didnt you???

Ah yup, but im only up to about 4.5 hours per day with the MH.
Doug, I do have I sump with about 5 gallons in it. Also, with the fan blowing on it, I'm losing even more water. Not only that but its still blazing hot here in Tampa. I'll be addong a ranco dual stage temp controller to make things a bit more efficient and stable along with the top-off.
Hopefully, after all this, I'll be able to have some SPS frags that will grow. So far, I have upgraded lighting, gotten Salifert kits, upgraded power heads, getting another fan w/ temp controller, will be receiving rock lift shortly (thanks fly guy), making an auto top off, and will be upgrading return pump. Anything else that you think is necessary? Oh, and im experimenting in making two part

What is your water temperature? must be high since the temp controlled fans keeps turning on. This could cause more water to evaporate. 5gal on a 29gal a week is a lot.

BAD, but not terrible...that water loss is due to evaporation. This is bad because the salt content in the remaining water will rise. It rises because while the water evaporates, the salt does not, it stays in the water causing your salinity to increase..
You should be careful and add water as needed.
