VorTech Propeller Pump

Anybody use one of these? Are they worth buying? Seems like something good for a nano...

Babs...I have never used one, but I know that wiszmaster (I think thats his name) had one. He has a nice build thread going on a 265 gal system. His comment I think was it moves a lot of water but the mounting of it is very limited...it can only be directed straight...in other words you have no flexibility in how you direct the flow. I think he was even selling it...

I found the thread...here it is...

If you ever see one in a store you will see that they are quite big and designed to push lots of water. I think it would probably create a torrent in a nano.

Way too big for a nano I would persoally give them another year to get the rest of the bugs out. I have several friends that have them and each seems to have a big of an issue with one thing or another, but they are getting the issues resolved which is nice.

I'd just go for the Tunze 6025....660gph + 250 from your pump = 910 gph in a 29g tank....that should be good if you point the Tunze toward the area w/ your SPS. And if you need to add more, the Tunze is small so you'll have room for a 2nd.

OMG! LOL. I could just see the opposing side of the nano blowing off and flying out the window into a neighbor's yard 2 blocks away! lol.

Tell you what babs, If you buy one and send it to me, I'll send you my Tunze nanostrem 6025. It's perfect for your size tank.

Um, let's see... $350 vs $62 ... Weighing this out, waiting for a verdit and it's no! I'll just buy the nanostream...

I had put a mag-drive3 in my tank and it does a wonderful job of moving water but it's big and it raised my tank temp from a lovely 76 degrees to 82 degrees so it's going...

Oh darn! And I thought it was a really good deal. (for me lol)

Have to agree that the smallest version of the nanostream (6025) should do you very well though.

Babs,

what size is that nano?

I like(d) the vortech - it had great flow ... much wider than a Tunze 6100.
But quiet a few issues along the way ... time will tell how they fair.

I seccond the recommendation for the Tunze 6025. If you want a little more flow after you get it - you can mode it to flow nearly 2x as much as original - VERY easy mod.
The Tunze NanoStreams are great for smaller tanks - imagine the pump being a tennis ball, and you holding it with a pair of grilling tongs - you can twist & turn the pump virtually any way & direct the flow!
(its smaller than a tennis ball!)

Good Luck.

Or...if you want to save some more money...try the Hydor Korallia. I have 4 of the 4's and really llike the flow...so do the fish.

Frank,

how do you like them size wise?
I believe they are 'deeper' than the nanostreams, aren't they?

a friend of mine has a 6045 - him & i both love the nanos - i have not yet had a chance to handle a korallia myself yet ... so i cannot fairly say anything about it.

I belilve the 4's are a little larger, but honestly...I am not one that gets too worked up about stuff in my tank. My tank is not drilled so I have an overflow...someday I'll probably get more ambitious and worry about that stuff.

I'll tell ya from what I have heard, the Korallia has the widest stream out there. It is almost to a fault. I think it does not travel as far across the tank because it is so wide, but I have 2 on each end of my tank and I think they meet somewhere in the middle (6' - 125 gal) so they work for me.

Here are my pro's and con's:

Pro's:
- reduced power consumption (8kw for 1200gph)
- wide, gentle flow
- magnet attachment
- easily adjustable
- price (got mine for $42 each new)
- easy to clean...very simple design

Cons:
- not too strong on the distance the flow travel's
- size (about the size of a soda can)

here is a pic so you can see the size...
