Visible Flow additive

What could you add to water to display different strenght and pattern of flow? Could adding a little chalk dust in suspension show this? It was an idea for a discussion of different powerheads and return nozzles for a local club meeting and I wondered if anyone had any ideas or even had seen a demonstration like this?

Here is a link to a thread were a guy wanted to use food coloring. But The thread kind of died, maybe you can revive it and ask if he did it or what he did. There is a few other alternatives discussed that you may like.

Are you wanting go do this in a tank with livestock? IF ther eis no livestock, how about Glitter?

You could see it easily and also filter it out pretty easily. It may try to settle though.

Air bubbles. A pump and an airstone is all you need. Nothing to clean up or worry about getting stuck to everything.

i like the air bubble idea, i can see my flow pattern when i add food for filter feeders...

Add some Microvert or some other type of food, thaw out a couple of cubes of brine shrimp and dump them in you can't miss the flow

It is more of a demo to be set up with an empty tank. I could try the airbubbles in my actual tank but I wouldn't want to try a bunch of food in my actual tank If I just let my needlewheel go in the display I should have plenty of bubbles.
