Visi-Therm Stealth Heater

I have this fully submersble stealth heater by marineland that shocked the heck out of me when I stuck my hand into the frag tank that is plumbed to the display. I unplugged everything and narrowed it down to the heater. Does anyone know how to get it replaced? I bought a new one and noticed on the box that it has a lifetime warranty. Any help would be great. Thanks.

It should tell you where to send it.Guess your tank isn't grounded.

It doesn't say and I just bought a grounding probe the same day it shocked me. I just didn't get around to putting it in....just my luck.

I would start with the store you got it from, and check the new one with a voltmeter before sticking hands in

Tagging along. I'm interested in seeing what it takes to get a replacement.

Just call up Marineland, they've sent me a few replacements on items that I even got 2nd hand. Wasn't a problem at all.
From their site: 800.322.1266 and our phone hours are 7:30am – 5:30pm (Eastern Time) Monday-Friday (marineland.com)

So just curious, wouldn't a GFCI outlet trip if a heater (or other appliance) was shorting out in the water like this? Reason I ask is because I ran all new electrical on a GFCI circuit for my latest setup. I spilled a little water a while back and it tripped really fast when the water hit one of the outlets. I didn't put a grounding probe in because I thought the GFCI would trip if anything shorted out, and I would rather have it trip so I know that something is wrong. My understanding is that a probe will remove the stray current but it may be some time before you know there is a problem with whatever is leaking current into the water. Thoughts and opinions????

Mine did not trip. I think it's bcause the tank is not grounded. There is nothing connecting the ground with the water until I stuck my hand in it. My heater was in the sump so the electric was just cycling through the sump, 90g display, and 50g frag tank.

Ok, so maybe I will add a probe (after all they are pretty cheap). My display has nothing in it electrical (only the lights above it). All the heaters, pumps, etc. are in the sump, so there is really no need to add a probe other than in the sump, right?

Now that is a good question. I just assumed that if I put one in my sump then any stray voltage would be handled because it is all a part of the same water column. But now you have me wondering about the powerheads in the display tank. Hmmm, do I need a probe in there as well?

Your theory is certainly sound that all the water is "connected". I have always hear of people putting a probe in each main area (ie. display, sump, frag tank, etc.). I have no power heads or anything else in my main display so I assume I only need to protect the sump. Anyone have any suggestions/thoughts or better even some anecdotal evidence?
