VHO bulb Question

I just got a VHO retro fit kit for the 95g (thanks Know-it-all)
My question is where is the bulb length determined for VHO's is that the pin to pin measurement? How do you determine where to drill up the end caps? Since the tank is a triangle I'd like to do
2 46 1/2
1 36
1 24
But I don't want to buy bulbs until I'm sure that configuration will fit in the canopy.
Also I need to add fans to the canopy How many and is there a prefered brand or Type ?
Thanks

Kelli, my 36 inch VHO bulbs measure exactly 35 3/4 inches from tip of pin to tip of pin. To determine where to place the endcaps, I do what Geoff said - I put the endcaps on the bulbs and dry fit them in the hood and then just make a mark where each screw hole should be.
