Question

VHO bulb question

I just rplaced one of my 48 inch VHO bulbs that went bad almost right away. They are 110 watt 10,000k. The first set, of wich one is still hooked up were Coralife. The replacement is a URI. Everything is working but the URI bulb looks pinkish compared to the Coralife, wich looks white in comparison. The URI is marked as 10,000k but it doesnt say wattage either on the bulb or the box. Could this just be a differance in the maker or is possibly a lower wattage? (the URI) Kinda stumped here. It was ordered as a 110 watt. The color differance is very noticable. Please help!!

Robert

The URI wattages of bulbs are:

24" NO = 20W, VHO = 75W
36" NO = 30W, VHO = 95W
46.5" NO = N/A, VHO = 110W
48" NO = 40W, VHO = 110W
60" NO = N/A, VHO = 140W
72" NO = N/A, VHO = 160W

I have read where others have said that their Aquasuns (10000 K) look pink, but I sure don't see this on my system, Robert. What ballast are you running this bulb on?

I went with the cheap AROs. Icecaps are in the future but not for a while. Ive moved bulbs around between the two and the bulbs acted the same so Im thinking the ballasts are okay. Each ballast is running two 48 inch 110 watt bulbs I started with coralife but as I read more and more it seemed as though most people like the URI bulbs in comparison. And I am aware that the Icecap ballasts are the best bet, its a matter of finances at the time. Hopefully it is a matter of brand differances in bulbs. But, delays have been the name of the game so if new ballasts are in order then so be it. I am hoping its just the brand of bulb at this time ( i hope I hope I hope)

I have had nothing but great success with URI bulbs, I run them on IceCap 660s , I have not noticed them looking pink

Michael, I noticed from your tank specs that you are using T-5 on one of your tanks, what do you think of them compared to the VHO?

I have a uri 24in aquasun bulb I bought just to test the color, and its noticably pink in my system, so I swapped it out for a actinic white bulb, which is white

So would the actinic white be a 50/50? And whats the differance in k value? And what kind of affect does that have on the overall intensity of light in the tank, because the way I understand it, watts per gallon is one thing but intinsity is what matters to the light hungry critters and is where the benifits are

my understanding(which is generally very little) is that the actinic white is comperable to a 50/50 bulb, which would suggest that it would be less intense than a aquasun since it has actinic. the actinic whites are listed at 12k. I got the aquasun because I am running a radium and a hamilton 14k(250w) on my tank and was concerned they might be too blue so I got an aquasun to see if that would 'lighten' the tank...it did, but I didnt like the pinkish tinge so I swapped it out for a actinic white.

Talking

SPC I find the T5s to be very bright when run on IceCap 660 ballasts, I would have to say that I find the T5s to be at least a bright as my VHOs. Feel free to come take a look sometime
