VERY VERY Near Disaster!!!!!!

Came home from work tonight. Heard strange noise immediatly after walking in door. The main pump on my 100g tank, a iwaki wmd40rlxt, HAD STOPPED PUMPING!!!!! To make it worse, the tank drained into the sump and the sump OVERFLOWED !!

So, I had to scramble to find a new pump on a saturday evening. The best I could find was a 4mdqsc little giant. Used....for $99. So I get home with the pump and start tearing apart the plumming. After draing the water out of the sump. When I get the Iwaki off, I see a piece of airline tubing sticking out of it...again....

So, I pull the airline tubing out and hook the pump back up. Works like a charm! I have know idea how long the tank was down (forgot to check timers :rolleyes but I worked on it for two hours straight! I had 2 mj900's running in it to keep the surface agitated. It seems that everyone is alright, a little slimy, but alright. Thank God!

I actually noticed over the past couple days that the pump was sounding funny. I guess this 6" piece of airline tubing had been working its way in for a couple days. When I got home from work tonight, the pump was just frozen. It was still making some terrible noise but it wasn't moving ANY water. I wonder if that could be compared to running it dry? Needless to say, its a good point about Iwaki pumps. I thought the thing just quit. Thats why I went and got the little giant. Now I have to try and take it back! That should be fun! I might just be stuck with it. Oh well....could have a spare!

Thanks for listening to me whine!

Hey Dennis, sorry to hear your floor got a little wet. How much water went over the top? I'm glad everything is ok! ***Looks at Mag 9.5*** I'll be right back...

Dennis
Do you have a siphon break in your return line?? We have a hole drilled about halfway up our return that prevents a huge amount of water draining into the sump. I also like to leave enough room in the sump so the main tank can drain all the way to this siphon break point. (although Jon usually puts more water in the sump) You might want to think about that!

Glad everything is ok.

Brook, yes i had holes drilled in the return. I guess they were too small. Either that or they were encrusted. I will definitly look into it. Thanks for reminding me!

Alice, Hel* ya im comming! Where is it gonna be? Or dont we know that quite yet? Please please please let me know! Talk to you later!

Cool

What happened to your Iwaki? Failure of an Iwaki is a rare event.

LOL ^^^ never mind....I read your post again and saw it was some "FOD" that stopped it. (Foreign Object Damage) It will probably run for another 30 years.....
