I would not worry about PC's in a hood causing a fire. I also would not consider 40 watts of PC's over a 10 gallon high light, more moderate lighting. I have seen people with anywhere from 70-250W metal halides on a 10 gallon tank, that would be high light...

Need to decide what is the most practical for you and what you are trying to achieve.

That's a bit more light.

If you do decide to look into the canopy option rather than a cover, my only suggestion would be to make sure you have vent holes on the sides so the fans in the fixture can do their job. As long as you have good air exchange you should have no problems with a fixture in a canopy. This doesn't mean you won't have issues with water temperature though. I have no experience with nano's and don't know how the lights will effect that small of a volume.

Open tank for me! But I also have a nice canopy the is about 14" taller than the top of the tank.
