venturi valve
Where can I buy a venturi valve? We have done a search online and it just tells us of skimmers with them on the skimmers. We are wanting to build a DIY skimmer. I have read you just need a sump and that a wet/dry filter isn't needed. What are your thoughts on that?

are you are looking for the little valve that sticks into the end of airline tubing and you twist to change air flow into the tubing? those come with maxi-jet 1200 PH. if you have those pumps, check your junk drawer for all the extra parts that collect over the years and you might find one. there are several in my drawer...
i prefer to locate the skimmer in the sump and imagine that it would be easier to DIY an in- sump skimmer. wet/dry is not needed, just a water container that holds the equipment you want to hide and a return pump. baffles are sometimes needed to eliminate bubbles from finding their way back into the tank. they also function to isolate part of the container with a constant water level, so the water doesn't drop below your heaters or skimmer pump intake, for example...

a lot will depend on how big your skimmer is, I use this venturi with a Mag 12, although there have been suggestions that such devices work better with presure-rated pumps. I have one on a Red Sea Berlin with some modifications at full throttle (although I did add a valve just in case it needed throttling back) and 0 height (submersed in the sump with the skimmer.) I would suggest using a piece of flexible pipe wit an air valve at the end to control the amount of air that can enter the air inlet for the venturi, this will make the modified skimmer much more adjustable.

And just in case you want another vendor: http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/.../7967/cid/2293They have 1/2" and 3/4". I've used a Mag 7 on my most recent skimmer. Anyone noticed that the latest MAg 7's state that they are pressure rated pumps? Didn't notice any changes on their flow rates at different pressures though. Geoff uses a Velocity T1 and has good results, though I understand he throttles it back. IF you've ever bought a Maxijet 1200 powerhead, they come with a bag of doodads that includes an air valve you can put onto the air line going to the venturi. Works great.
