velocity/poseidon pumps... hot ;)

a little review i guess

i've been mixing and circulating some freshly mixed saltwater in a 29g tank (probably has around 20g of water in it now), one single T3 pump recirculating the water. and right now, the temp is sitting at just under 88 degrees. it's been slowly creeping up since yesterday.

good to know that my chiller should be here any day now, i guess that i'm goinf to need it with FOUR of these pumps pushing water around

but it is VERY silent!

My T4 in the summer I can't touch for more than a few seconds or it burns my hand. They do run extremely hot, but I have never heard of a quieter pump.

pump/heater combo unit

I run 1 T3 on my 52 and no sump. I have to keep at least one fan blowing directly on the pump at all times and usually two in the summer time.

So what size tank are you going to run 4 of these on???

I have a T-2 on my 110 gallon and the pump is warm, but not hot to the touch. Could be the pump is working harder then it should or the water is being heated up and only 20 gallons never has a chance to cool down with a T-3. With a chiller the pump should run cooler also.

i have 3 running on my system. prolly will make it 4 after i redo my skimmer again. i do not have a problem keeping my tank cool. then again i have 90' worth of exposed PVC in the crawlspace. an accidental chiller.

they do run warm. the only drawback they have.

Since I'm about to buy a T3, I feel the need to ask this question:

Is there any pump that DOESN'T run hot?

My Gen-X's pumps are hot, my mag's are submerged, but they can raise the temp in the tank considerably. Other than little maxijets and rio's...what pump(s) don't run hot?

I guess my question is...is this a concern for these pumps? Or just typical?

think about it this way. watts equals heat. no way around that.

i have not had a problem with any of my Velocities overheating. i have seen T4's overheating, i think the pump does not really like to run that wide open, needs some head pressure to be happy.

external pumps that have a wet end will not heat the water. pumps like Sequence and Ampmaster have a shaft driven wet end that is completely seperated from the motor. as long as these pumps are not enclosed with the body of water than there should be very minimal heat transfer to the water column.
