Question

Variations In Specific Gravity

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question on Specific Gravity this time.

I have an open top tank so therefore lose water each day through evaporation.

My question is how much do you let your salinity rise before topping up the water?

you really don't want to move alot.It can add stress to your tank mates.Buy or make a auto top off.It was the best thing I did to my tank.I fill it up evry week or longer, and I don't have to worry if I'm on vaction!

Hello, I top off everyday , 1-2 gallon , If You keep up with it the salinity should be ok , You can use a float switch and have it do it for You , My tank is open top but even a closed Canopy will evaporate, I don't think You have to worry about it , Vince

I use a dosing pump so mine does not fluctuate at all day to day, but I think the real question is how much fluctuation can be tolerated by the animals. I can't remember reading any science data on this but I'm sure some is out there. I believe that Spanky has said that on the Keys reefs the PH and salinity can vary quite a bit due to daily environmental factors (tides, rain fall etc...), but I don't remember any exact #'s. Maybe he will see this thread and comment.
