vacuumed fanworm?

While doing a water change tonight, I think I accidentally sucked my poor little fanworm out of his home. I use a rigid tube on my siphon hose to remove algae tufts and things like that. He was about 2/5 to 1/2 inch across. I didn't get that close to him, but I don't see him in his tube. Even when he retracts normally I can see the tips of his plume sticking out, and I can't even see that. If they are really disturbed can they pull THAT far down in their tube or does it sound like I sucked him up? Are they even that easy to get OUT of their tubes?

I'd wait, as mine can completely go underground and any part of the tube sticking up can be broken off.

He finally did pop up. All the others re-appeared quickly after, but he waited nearly 2 hours, so I finally decided to worry

Thanks.
