UV Sterilizer for Reef Tank - Y or N

The LFS says not to add UV to reef tank - they say it will kill the important biological - I have friend who says to add UV to kill parasite and clean water so I can add Tang and other fish without ICH worries.

Any thoughts on UV's

100% YES Add it. The amount of good bacteria vs the amount of bad that it will kill is far greater.

I myself Have 3 10 WATT Units on a 75 Gallong Reef.

I have it perticularly for my Blue Tang and Flame which is quite sensitive.

My vote is Y

Can't vote one way or another on the UV because I know NADA about them. But as for ich and tangs... well there are some opposing lines of thought on that and you may want to research a little more if having a tang is the only reason you want a UV. Many believe that ich is present at all times and stress causes it to surface. If this line of thought is indeed true.... not sure what a UV would do for you. And I tend to lean towrds that line of reasoning because I have had fish with ich while all other inhabitants remain ich free.

I only have three fish - All perculas which I think are great and have had for 4 years now - I would love to add a few more fish and a Purple Tang is top of the list - The only reason for a UV is to clean the water of ICH so as to have a better chance of keeping larger and more expensive fish alive -
Right now I have a very basic setup and do not want to monkey with it too much - I just use a wet dry underneath with skimmer- no refugium, no kalk drip, no plenum. I am not sure the optimal way to set reef system up but i think I have a pretty nice setup so far. If a UV will clean the water better - Then I think it makes sense - If it will kill good bacteria that the tank needs- Then I will do without.
