UV product question?

Hey guys I have never used a UV before but I know I need one. Anyways does this model on the link below need a pump to be plugged to it? It doesn't really say if it's just a plug and go system or not. If i need a pump, do i just buy some small pump that pushes out say around 200-350 GPH and just connect tubbing to the UV system?
So I think 10w for my 65g should be plenty of wattage to kill the bad stuff out my reef tank? Also i heard Lifeguard is one of the best reputable brands for UV's. So thanks for any help you can offar.

Yeah, it looks like it needs a pump, but I really wouldn't get one like that unless you have a really small tank. If you expect it to kill pests you will have to have the water moving through it really slow.

If you look at the Emporor aquatics line they are very large UV's to increase the contact time between the water and the UV light. They also rate there UV's two ways,.. water movement for pathogens,.. and water rate for killing algae (If memory serves) which is very good to know.

Thank you for the advise, however it's out of my price range, I just bought a $250 Eruro reef skimmer for my tank, so i'm upgrading, I just can't afford to by another 200+unit again.

How slow should the water movement be in GPH? And would 10watts be enough for a 65g?

If you want me to be honest I wouldn't bother with a 10W unit at all,.. I'd just run carbon.

You don't Need a UV IMHO, and I think that in order for one to be useful it has to be much larger.

I have absolutely no intentions, right now, of ever running a UV Sterlizer. They simply aren't worth the money for a small one that isn't going to do any good. If you spend a ton of money you can get one that is beneficial.

Both really, I had two fish die a month ago, but they were only new fish. The LFS guy said it's because I don't have a UV in my tank.... So I'm just confused on whether or not I should spend the money on one and what type of wattage for my tank size or if i need one so I an add new corals and fish.

I don't think it was correct of the lfs to say it was your lack of uv that caused those fish to die. They could have died for any number of reasons including the possibility that the lfs sold you sick fish. I wouldn't base my decision to purchase a uv on that. I did buy a nice unit (aqua uv) and purposefully waited for a while to turn it on to see what would happen in my fowlr; it seemed to me to make the water clearer.

The LFS told you wrong. Spend the money on something else.
