UV mounting-horizontal vs vertical,,,,Latest Updates

Well , as some of you might know, i got a new UV for my 180 FO,,,40w AquaUV brand. The old Aquanetics unit bit the dust after 24/7 ,for 16 yrs or so,,
I planned on setting up the new one today, but other plans(wife) changed that, so i'm gonna attempt tomorrow.
As i test placed(or tried to) the new unit in the stand, i found out i have no room to do this(horizontally) like the old, smaller one. I have a wet/dry for this tank, and the sump is set in a cut out hole in the stand, to allow more clearance .So shifting the sump over is not a option...i plan to install the UV in-line after the Mag pump ,then out to the pump outlet in the tank, 3/4 hose, not PVC or the likes,,,so i'm flexible in the routing of the outlet hose,,,of course the uv is too tall to fit in the stand upright, so i was thinking of mounting the unit vertically, more on the back of the stand instead.access to the unit is possible , i believe if i go this route, will just have to rig up a way to mount it vertically, level -wise. don't look like a big problem, as the stand is open in the back. THe manual says it can be mount either way, so that is not a problem.
Just wondering if there is a difference in operation of running it upright?
as it stated in the book, it can be done this way, tho either way it must be level. it stated which way flow thru the unit needs to be, but also said, if that way is not possible, any flow direction is OK( that statement made me wonder,,,)
Also, with the use of hose, and straight fittings going into the unit,i don't think i will lose much flow with this new diversion,,,right?
This probably sounds like a silly thread/question, just wanted to bounce it off you folks out here, b4 i get to work on it in the morning,,,
Thanks
OOPS! One more thing, should i use silicone o-ring lube on the threaded fittings, to make removal easier for future bulb replacement/quartz tube cleaning?
and mebbe a lil on the bulb "seal"? This make sense, or a no-no?
Thanks again

Junk

It'll work in any position - oh, did I say that

For the flow - these things require a "slower" flow anyway for the "dwell time" but just keep the PVC at 1". A little "lube" never hurts

the Aqua units have the output several inches from the actual top of the housing. I would worry that it get full of air and might crack the sleeve mounting it vertical.
Use the silicone on the O-rings.

Thanks, my outlet hose (after the UV) has a check valve, so i hope to be OK on air not making it's way back to the top of the unit. will prob run the system after i install UV without turning it on for a while and make sure air is evac'ed from housing.
Mounting it horizontal looks to be pretty much out of the question , as it will not fit, at least easily in the stand, but will brain storm it today.
kinda concerned about all that horizonal hose's somehow affecting the pumps output GPH.

On the slower the better,,, i thought that too, but the manual said not to divert water from the unit, supposedly their's is made/designed for "large" flow thru the unit.
gonna try the horizontal mounting first,,,then i might have to go upright,,
I'll let you all know,,,
(dang you , Jerel, you always know how to get a person to worryin' )LOL

I think they mean not to say put a tee before and regulate the flow that way,but could be wrong.

Update:
It'll fit OK horizontally if i squush it just right, not my ideal location, but it'll do
BTW: Did i mention that the quartz tube is VERY DELICATE?
Premium's sending a replacement out today,,,,,,
Dern thing, was getting right up to the point of puttin' in the bulb , and go figger the weight of that heavy ol bulb, at the half-way in or more point, just touched the end of the quartz tube,CRACK!!!!!!!!!!
Grrrrr, i knew better, but i knew it was going TOO ez so far, and was takin' my time, cleaned the sump/pump /lines/check valve/trays/some of the bio balls etc.
right at the part when the bulb goes in,,,,did i say GRRRRRRRRR?
$75 later,,,,(this one's comin' out of MY pocket,,,)
Well, the wifey did ask what i wanted for Xmas,,,,did not expect it to be a overgrown test tube,,,,with fragile qualities,,,,
oh well, i'll laugh about it one day,,,,,i hope,,,

Quartz tube still broken, 180 is lookin' good after the work i did on it today, redardless that a UV is not running in it,,,,hope to have the new tube in hand inna few days(shorter than the holiday waitin' i did for the unit),told the wife tonite when she got up from her pre-sleep for work in the ER tonite:
"how'd the UV go?",,"remember when you asked today about what i wanted for Xmas?", "why?" ," i broke the quartz tube on the UV today", " YOU WAT?"
i went on to tell her how ez it was to bust the tube, and how close i was to completing the install,,,,she asked if i ordered another from Premium , (i did),(Jeremy at Premium said : "yup , it's SALTY,after he gave me the price on tube)
(also said ,ALREADY?) ( and how much,,,i told her $50 ish($78 w/.shipping) she's not happy , but better than i thought, with all the talk i did about the quartz tube being "delicate" , i think i prepped her for disaster,,,,and with my luck,,,,
Oh well, another story in my life, hope you enjoyed it,,,,

Go figger, I get a $11K profit sharing bonus, and a whopper of a paycheck this coming week(60hrs O-time for 2 week period) and this gotta happen,,,,
the new UV, the monster-bi-yearly wholeseller order, the replacement quartz tube, the holidaze coming up,,,,,

Yah, I think i might let her assist,,more for her benefit than mine,,,,
She always(most times) asks if i need help on some things,,,
and yells at me when i did not(most times its when she is not around)
1: taking the chest freezer outa the basement
2: Putting same chest freezer in my truck
3:just about any heavy/difficult job around here

I do get her help , when i really ,really need it,and some times when i think she will feel better about helping me,
With my back the way it is(bottom three vert's fused together,to the tailbone)
i have learned to work smart, not hard, and adapted the way i do a lot of things around here and at work,,
BTW: my back is bothering me more than normal today, and the wifey asked me if it was from doing the UV install yesterday,,,told her it was not,she don't see the stuff i do on a daily basis around here, and at work, so if she sees me havin a bad back day, she most times thinks it's from the one thing she saw me do,,,oh well, hope the UPS guy misses all the potholes, Told Jeremy at Premium to pack the quartz sleeve inna washing machine box, with plenty of bubble-wrap..
When he told me the price on the sleeve($75'ish w/shipping) and i think i said wow,or something like that, he said "Yup ,it's SALTY" told him i liked that comment, would only work around here tho, "regular" people would not get it,,,
