Uv

So, what would happen if I just had a UV light over my sump? have any of you tried that? would that help with cleaning the water?

Probably not do a whole lot. There is an issue of contact time and intensity that aid in making them work. You might work on you tan and emit a bit UV radiation which could be fun

yea its just like my parents 6000g pond. They have a uv that does 200 or so gph but we ball valved it down to like 50. They water quality increased dramitically. That isnt something you can do on your sump though. They do make ones you can put on your sump though with a little pump. It would pump the water from your sump in the uv filter slowly then back into your sump. i dont know if it is worth the money on a reef tank. a pond YES a aquarium....not so much

they are great tools if plumbed properly. they work best when put on the inlet to the skimmer. that way any algae killed by the UV is immediately removed by the skimmer. if not plumbed before the skimmer than all dead matter is able to settle in the tank and fuel algae growth.
