Also norton does not always uninstal correctly. The way to fix it is to reinstall and then remove it. Frankly I dislike norton, computers take a big performance hit with it loaded.

Are you running a fat32 file system or NTFS?, try running scandisk on the drive, possible crosslinking going. Assuming your running windows xp

If you are running fat32 you may want to convert to ntfs.
Click on start/run and type cmd [enter]

Convert c: /fs=ntfs

Also goto my computer and look at the directory that the file is saved in.

Click on tools / folder options

Click on view
Make sure the circle is checked to display hidden files
Uncheck hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck hide protected operating files

On the part where it says managing pair of web files and folders should have show both parts and manage them individually checked. Click apply and look in the directory and see how many files are name normal.xxx where xxx is anything.

Report back if this does not help

Hey Jimbo! Great to hear from you!

How do I know if he or I are running fat32? We both have factory installed XP home edition....

Thanks, I will pass this on to him. and Yes, something was going on with Norton b/c he had to uninstall it, and then when he tried to reinstall it, it said it was already there, or something like that. Somehow, he got it reinstalled (I wasn't there, and he has been terribly busy)

I'll get back with you for sure.
thanks to all,
Shirley

Does he have Norton Antivirus or Norton Corporate Antivirus? If it is NAV2003 or 2004, there is a place in the options to turn off scanning of Office Documents, which will tell him if there is an issue there. If Norton Corporate, I don't think that setting is available.

Earl, what is stinger and what does it do? I am in the industry and had never heard of it, but always looking for new tools.
Otherwise, the uninstall and clean out of the templates dir is spot on.

Also, when he reloads, have him look for updates.

He has the Corp edition. I *think* it's 2003, but might be 2002.

Sorry to hear about word problems. Did he get it worked out?

Does he have a copy of office97 or xp?
If the file is normal.doc and on other computers
it will open, then maybe installing a older version
of office will fix this until the crunch is over.

No, he hasn't had time to mess with it. He's working on project deadlines and will use all this advice on Sat/Sun. He has Office XP.

Thanks,
Shirley

If his version is 2003 then officeXP or 97
should be older and may open the doc
on his computer.

this may not be a option but it seems you
can always come up with older versions
and its only a uninstall/install worth of time.
