Upgrading the ubb
Ok gang, consider it a Christmas present that's a little late. I purchased the membership to the UBB so that we can get upgrades for the next year. There have been 2 big upgrades since this verion and there is a really big upgrade coming out in the next few weeks. So big, in fact, that they are jumping numbers from 5.47d (the latest currently available) to 6.0 . So, it should be a good one.
Steven- whoever built the other webpages on the site put them in with the ubb stuff. I can see this from the url's. we can put them in the main index of the site and use html instead of cgi. This would make changing them alot easier because my knowledge of cgi is limited to what you need to get ubb installed and running. I just need to get the ftp address, username and password to go in and redo those pages and upgrade the ubb. The upgrade shouldn't take too long to do. My guess would be about an hour of down time.
What kind of web pages, ubb forums, etc. would everyone like to see. What needs to be updated, etc.??

Awesome Brooke, will the new upgrade show the number of people hitting on a particular thread and or list the last person to post a reply?

Doug, I'm honestly not sure what is included in this version. The new version 6 does include the last active thread on the main forum page. It'll be a surprise won't it! I know it will include spell check....yeah!!

I bought a book today and I have been reading up. I plan on doing a medium size tank because I am only going to live in this house for another year or so. Mainly I just want to do a practice one before I spend some real cash on a large tank setup. I would have never guessed that this would be my hobby. I always thought it would be brewing beer and bad hang overs.
Anyways if you need help with ubb especially with hacking the board. I can do it and real fast. I have done a ton of ubb programming.
There are some real nice hacks like ones that show who is online, who posted last, private messages, a news banner, etc... I have done lots of other hacks, but they would not apply to a board such as this.

Russ-
I would love to add some hacks. I've done a few before, but the help is appreciated. Let me see what they will be adding on to the next version, then I will know what hacks we might want.
Thanks and welcome!

V6 is a ways off, I know someone that is doing beta testing. And to be honest I doubt it will be anything good because the programmers at infopop are total idiots. It is some of the worst code I have seen in my entire life.

Russ, do you know what size the tank will be and or what you want in it? Reef, or fish only etc. Thanks for your offer for help on the board.

brooke, what customization of ubb were you thinking of? I know that ubb does not support any type of custom script, and if you dont know cgi that well, Im not so sure I want to venture out into custom cgi.????

It is very easy. There is a board called ubbhackers which has detailed scripts already laid out. You just copy/paste. Though I have written many custom scripts. Also rewrote how the user database is stored because it has problems after 5000 users. I have written a very complex ip tracking system that trackers ips on thread views. Dates the times etc... Anyways it is not very hard to do. I find it quite fun because I used to program.
Brooke check my post a few up. I posted what I am going to buy from a friend and am asking what I need to upgrade to support a reef.

If you need help with UBB I have been using it for well over a year now. My board is on user 19000 now. Though I have pruned the users to about 5000. Anyways if you need any help shout. I will be reading this board trying to pick up a few things. I plan on doing my first salt-water tank this summer or maybe a little earlier.

Welcome Russ, glad to have you around. Since you are at the planning stage now, take time to figure out what you want to end up with and what it will take to accomplish that goal. Its always a good idea to put your plan in writing then check it out with people who have been thru it. It saves a lot of $ and aggrevation in the long run

Ok, I've played with the colors some. Give me some feedback...it's not quite right yet. How do you like the new reply buttons, etc. I think I could get the guy who made these to make the 4 web buttons on top to match these. Then it would look a lot better. Also, is there any interest in updating the eel logo?? Horge, didn't you make some pretty cool logos for RC awhile back. I remember being quite impressed with them. Just wondering.
Thanks-
Brooke
