I have done a lot of diving hear and there over the years and I still say nothing beats the cold water of Monterey and Carmel in California.......as long as the Sea Lions are not around, they know how to stink up the water! I just love the idea of the cold water setup. I am going to have to do some research. Problem is I am in Minnesota and it will not be easy to get stuff out here.

do you know if Kelp goes Holocarpy like Caleurpa does when it reaches it comfort max? do not know if it is something to think about if you plan on keeping a kelp stand long term.

A LFS near monterey had a coldwater reef. They had a friend with a license that was able to collect her some coldwater corals straight from the monterey bay ocean.

i missed this thread while the past year was busy.....

its incredible, makes me want to start up an east coast cold water tank. might make me dust off my scuba gear

where could i get an acrylic than that thick, and what are the stocking levels?

like say, how much tank would i need if i were to collect native rock anemones, brittle stars and the more unique looking shellfish?

could i assume that native anemones would not require high light levels?

i had thought about a cold water tank a few years back, but the condensation was something i didn't want to deal with, also, i assumed that there would be algae and cyano problems for some reason, not sure why, but that was the impression i had. maybe i had it mixed up with brackish systems that i never had much luck with.

I have seen a cold water set up made from a standard 55 gal acrylic tank....which had 3/8 thick acrylic. It did sweat a little when the ambient temps surpassed 95. I made my tanks from 1" to completely eliminate sweating. Sweating all depends upon your local heat and humidity.
